Hello,

I am new to discus and recently purchased a four inch snakeskin. I have him in a 55 gallon community tank. My ammonia is 0 nitrates 0 ph 6.5 , temp 84. My discus is eating fine and swimming around. The only problem is he keeps getting white spots on him and he is constantly rubbing up against things. I suspect ich, but the thing is I have an elephant nose in the tank so i cant treat with regular meds . Ive been dosing with aquari-sol and salt for the past three days. I have a quarantine tank but its only a ten gallon.

Is there any medications i can use to treat the ich but wont burn the skin off my elephant nose?

thanks

Heres a pic of him, you see the white stuff on him near the top of his fin, it kinda looks like a scratch with ick.

Does it look like some scales are missing? I can't really see from the pic. What makes you think it's ich?

I wouldn't put Aquarisol in the tank if you have sensitive fish, unless you're sure it's ich. Aqurisol is copper-based, and can be harsh. It'll probably harm your plants, too.

No, it doesnt look like the scales are missing. I see a small white spot, then it looks like white streaking after the white spot. He keeps trying to scratch that spot. I just saw my elephant nose scratch against my driftwood. My angel fish will also dart really quick like somthing is nipping him out of nowhere. I think the discus brought something into the tank. I just fed them frozen blood worms ten minutes ago and all fish are eating and swimming around fine. Its just the darting and scratching im concerned about. Do you know any medications that would be safe to use in my tank Lotus? at this point i really dont care about the plants. Heres another pic of the discus

I've heard Rid-Ich is good, gentle and doesn't harm plants.

It's really hard to say what that is from the picture, and your description is kind of vague. Ich looks like grains of salt. Is that what it looks like? Is it fuzzy?
I dont think its ich anymore, more of it spread to his tail and now its starting to look like white patches. They do look kinda fuzzy, heres a new pic. He looks like he has tiny clear bumps on his face too. What should i do? whatever he has seems to be spreading quick.

I would look into Pimafix.
I had a similar white fuzziness appear on some tetras that I apparently did not quarantine for long enough , and it ended up spreading to some of my angelfish.

The Pimafix cleared it up without harming any of the plants in my tank.

Keep in mind that I don't have experience with discus though, so I can't comment on whether or not they'll have any particular sensitivities to the Pimafix. According to the product information, however, it is supposedly an 'all-natural' herbal-type of treatment.

Either way, I'm sure it is better than simply allowing the fungus or whatever it is to spread unchecked.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

I recently had some serious trouble with my now deceased Angels, it has a striking similarity to your trouble, I tried Melafix & Pimafix (7 days worth), neither did much, the "fungus" looking stuff then transferred to my other fish (which it was doing even while the angels were alive).

In a fit of panic, and based on some advice from another fish keeper, I tried Maracyn & Maracyn Two (I used them together) for a duration of 5 days, All the symptoms seemed to clear up.

I don't know how your Elephant will respond to these meds, nor do I know how the plants will fare, But I do know it solved my specific problem.

Because there is no way to tell how far the contagion has spread (assuming it is contagious) I'd treat the infected fish in the tank he/she is in, rather than moving into quarantine.

Keep us posted on your progress

I actually used pimafix this morning. I contacted my LFS and asked him for advice. He told me pimafix is garbage and doesnt even work. He told me to pick up some FURAN-2, which I did. Im going to remove the pimafix with carbon and dose the FURAN-2 tommorow.

like i told you in the chat. it seems more like a parasite and pimafix is not garbage. keep the lights off, try to keep his stress levels down as much as possible, probably move your elephant nose to another tank if you can, i dont know how hell react to the meds.
try 25% water changes instead of the 5% and see if that helps.

quarentining is always a good choice too.
