White Spot?

#1
Two days ago I noticed that my tetras have little white dots on them. It looks like a grain of sand, and will be on either the fin or the body itself. I've not seen the fish trying to scratch though.

ph = 7.0
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 20ppm
GH = 5deg
These numbers are from last night. This morning I did a 30% wc.

Is this White Spot or something else? How do I get rid of it?

I also lost my ghost shrimp last night. Could the slightly elevated Nitrate levels have done that? Poor little guy. :(

Thank you,
Jonathan

Yes - you have Ich (and I doubt that NO3@20 took out your shrimp).

Treatment for Ich falls into two catagories - Meds or salt.

The Ich parasite has a three day cycle, during which it goes through two phases. One where it is attached to the fish (the grain of salt) and secondly, when it is in free-fall heading to the substrate to multiply. The meds only work on the free-fall stage, so the treatment should be for at least 6 days to ensure it all gets caught.

Medications for Ich are widely avalable, or you can go for the tried and trusted method of adding salt to the tank and upping the temperature (slowly) to the mid 80's.

Not all fish are salt (or temperature) tolerant, so ask first - (tank size and occupants info would help)
