I know Pacus aren't considered cichlids but can someone help? I have a 90 gal with 3 albino oscars and 3 red belly pacus. All fish were fine for 6 months and had no prob whatsoever. Noticed the water being a little too green ( always have this problem this time of year as sunlight comes thru 2 diff. areas) so I treated it with algae destroyer. Even used LESS than directed. 2 hours later all 3 pacus are dead. Oscars and Pleco are fine? Anyone ever hear of this b4??

Prob. because this tank was SEVERALY...overstocked. Pacus alone grow to 3'. A 90gal might be able to support 1 oscar, maybe 2 if water changes are done a lot.

How big were your fish? How many and how often did you do water changes?

I say they died from ammonia poisening. To many fish, big messy tankbuster species at that and it caused an waste problem. Or that algae chem poisened them.

Myrtle Beach nice, i'm in Columbia :)

Not even close to overstocked. They were small ( 4 inches max ). I'd have to go with the alga destroy killed them. Just wondered if anyone ever heard of that. Not bragging but I haven't killed a fish for many years. Had several that killed each other though. And don't recall seeing anything on the label that denotes the possibility of my fish dying!! Btw, I like Columbia. Cool city..

why do my African cichlids keep dying for no apparent reason?

when our african cichlid's die there are always like 4-5 new little babies...do they die after they have babies? because it has happened to 3 of our bigger fish we have about 12 fish in a 55 gallon tank. about 6 of them are little like 2i nches and the other ones are about 4-5 inches. 3 inches is about the average for half a dozen of them. my dad loves these fish...what is happening? Is there too many in the tank or what? please help me!!!:)

I suspect the mothers are dying once they release their fry. They survive long enough to do this, but the moment the fry are released they are 'lifted from their mortal toil'. Bear in mind the mothers don't eat at all, if much , when they're carrying young. At the same time you're keeping them in a smallish tank with a male who wants to breed repeatedly with them, even when they're already carrying. The stress is too high.
Golden rule - DON'T keep pairs of mbuna - keep at least 3 females per male. Electric yellows are so placid they're the only ones you could even consider as a pair, and even that will be pretty tough on the female.

i was in charleston for four years for college... miss it so much. made many-o-trips to myrtle for shows at house of blues. my fiance and my favourite restaurant ever is umberto's on the boardwalk
Cool, never eaten there....gotta go try it. :)

I agree with wayne. Its better to have a few females for each male. I've never seen it happen with many fish, or after every birth. But like wayne said they don't eat much while holding. Probably stress, again like wayne said. ;) Have you sexed your fish (to the best of your ability) to see what ratio of males and females you have? Could be that the females are some of the smaller fish in the tank and they just get beat and stressed to death after holding. Mbuna males and others are known to harass a holding female until she spits, basically giving the fry or eggs as food to the others.
