I dont think so.. I have gotten my overwatted 40 watt tubes wet accidently.. and they never broke.. I was worried about this aswell.. being incandescent bulbs will break if gotten wet.. but I spose the chance is still there.. so I wouldnt want it to be in a place where it will constantly be getting wet.. as this will cause problems elseware such as dont want to get the ballast wet and endcaps etc.... this would be even worse if you have them over saltwater...

This is somewhat of a concern of mine. I keep my tank fairly warm and there's a decent amount of condensation that builds up on the hood. I would prefer to go without the diffusion sheet that covers my bulbs, but am nervous about the bulbs and the end pieces getting soaked (which was happening until I noticed it).

i'm thinking of making my own cover for a flourescent light to save myself some money. my parents won't give me anymore money for fishtank stuff. i'm saving up my lunch money though. i really need to get a job cause i'm always broke and i can't last a day without lunch.

from my experience your flourescent most likely won't blow up no matter how much water gets on it. On my storage/growing tank I don't have a top on it and have a regular 15watt flourescent fixture sitting on the edge of the tank and a little *thing* this is very unstable and the entire light assembly has fell in the tank.

I've come home to find the whole thing in the water still running and never had a problem. Although the starter's starting to go now.... And the fish haven't ever been hurt by this.

Note:
I know how i have it setup is bad, but I don't want to pay for the cover now.

thanks quaffle cause that is exactly what i needed because sometimes my filter splashes water all over one of the lights and i don't want to buy a cover either or put something over the tank. it'll be too much work and my parents will say what the hell are you doing. i felt like stealing some flourescent lights from the lams and put them in my tank. im too lazy anyways and thats the easiest way i can think of.

i was gonna make one out of the type of screen you put on windows or on some screen doors and put the same metal thing they put to keep the screen on a window in a square shape. to me that seemed cheaper and easier but i want someones opinon on it too. after i have that cover i was gonna make a light like the one from this site
