well i guess that anything is possible, but i really dont think that your pump is going to burn down your house while you are on vacation :D your father is like mine mine (every thing that moves is a fire hazzard)
just have someone keep an eye on your fish while you are gone if your dad is that worried about it.

Don't worry about it that too much, your house is not going to burn down.  If you forgot to turn off the refrigerator, turn off the fan, turn off the porch light, turn off the powerfilter on your aquarium,  is your house going to burn down?  You are being overly paranoid.  But look on the positive side, if your house burns down, you can sue the manufacturer for that defective item and you can have that money to buy a bigger fish tank with better air pumps!!!

Rena pumps are UL listed, which means UL has tested them to make sure they work right.  That's not to say it can't happen, but you've got just as strong of a chance of your alarm clock going up in flames. Tell yer dad that if he's really concerned about that, then he needs to go to the main house breaker and turn EVERYTHING off.

But just to make sure...Did you splice a check valve into the air line?

If the power goes off while you're away, and your air pump is sitting below the water-line (say like, on the foor or in the cabinate of the stand), water gets siphoned back into the compressor through the air-line, and that could cause the pump itself to burn out. Whether that would cause a fire is beyond be, but I guess it could happen.

A check valve is a nifty little platic device you can splice right into the airline between the pump and tank that will prevent the water from backing into the pump. Thus preventing the pump from getting wet and burning out.

Not that the power would go off while you're away, but it could happen *shrug*.
