I know convicts are SA and not African. I was just making a comment for general referrance because many people believe that all cichlids, no matter where they are from, can all go together because they are all labled "aggressive" fish. And most people like Rift Valley Africans because they are more brightly colored than SA fish. So they get an African and stick it in their SA tank because a cichlid is a cichlid and all cichlids can go together. Not!
The question was what other fish can go in their tank and I would reccommend staying with other SA cichlids (like convicts although I wouldn't put convicts in that mix personally), but not to go out and simply add just any cichlid (like an African because the LFS might say, "sure you can put that in your tank" and then you realize the nice bright pretty red zebra just killed your angels).
Point of referance. Kribs are African cichlids, just not Rift Valley. They come from regions of Africa that are similar in nature to Amazonian SA (I think the specific location are tributaries of the Zarie (aka Congo) river, but I'm not quite sure), which is why they look more like SA cichlids insteady of what most people associate what an African cichlid to look like. Kribs are quite nice, and will probably go great in that combination of fish. Their water chemistires requirements I believe are also very similar to SA fish, and they're not as aggressive as convicts so far as I know, nor get as big. They like lots of little caves to hide and dart around in.
