I would think it is because of dust particles etc. No matter how clean you are with the wood stove, you still have more gunk in the air than you would if you didn't have one.

That being said, my parents have 2 wood stoves in their house that they use as their sole source of heat for most of the year. I had a fishtank when I lived in the house...they didn't seem any worse for the wear...although it was just a small tank.

I would think with good filtration whether a house has a wood stove or not would be inconsequential. (Of course if you have a wood stove in your house and you put a tank up right next to it I'm guessing you might have some problems besides temperature...so maybe its one of those buyer beware type deals.)
