The drubbing convicts are taking in the "Convicts Rule" thread made me wonder what more experienced cichlid keepers rate as the worst cichlid to keep. I'm still so new that convicts rate pretty high with me so I'll keep out of it. :)

I wasn't just going for bad looks or cooking skills. I also meant very hard to feed, overly expensive and drops dead if you bump the tank, refuses to tolerate anything that moves under water etc. Just any cichlid that is an all around poor candidate for the average person to keep.

I used to hate oscars until a friend of mine begged me to adopt his 12" red... that thing has possibly the coolest personality of any fish I've ever owned. I stand right next to the glass and he comes right up to me and studies me as I study him.

BP's are butt-ugly. Flowerhorns are cool but I can't seem to get past them being hybrids.

My favorite cichlid though, has to be the mighty green terror. I named mine Bruce Banner until he gets bigger ;)

Ah! Now you're getting to the point! Actually the average person shouldn't keep cichlids, they should keep danios and other "community tropicals", for as many weeks as they can keep them alive that is! Let's leave the cichlids to talented and very much above average fishkeepers shall we? LOL!

I think the worst cichlid is the one some idiot buys because he thinks it will be cool to watch it eat feeder fish. I have nothing against getting an animal that eats live food, but I don't think there is huge entertainment value in it. There always seem to be a couple of young guys in the chain stores buying up a bag of sick-looking feeders, believing it makes them tough to own a fish like that. I always wonder if their next step will be cock or dog fights. :(

something to do with testosterone, and a macho persona. Thats one of the biggest things that turn me off to the SA/CA cichlids, because when most people see them the first thing they ask is if they can watch them eat a live fish. If they want to see somethine being ate, go watch the discovery chanel. (or NGG)

What do y'all think about a "Cullnator"? A large fish-room cichlid (provided a big enough tank) to eat the culls that come from a breeding program?

It does pester me when someone asks stricly for a large agressive cichlid. Something tells me its not going to be kept for natural behavior....and then not even in a large enough tank.

Nothing wrong with that at all IMO. A good way to dispose of unwanted or culled fry. Better than just flushing them, and the preditory fish gets to have a 'natural' snack. More natural at least than goldfish feed to an oscar. Plus no worries about introducing bacteria or other harmfull pests to the fish.
