??? A question to all. I had several fish that had septicemia, so I started to treat my 75 gal. tank with Maracyn-Two from Mardel Labs. My levels were all fine 4 days ago and now my nitrite and nitrate levels are very high and the ammonia never seemed to go up. None of the fish seem to be affected by this, and I'm a little puzzled. Are these false reading or actual? The tank did cloud uplike a bacteria bloom, but the instructions said it would. I've been trying to contact the mfg. but have had no luck. Has anyone seen this before.

one of the reason why amonia never peaked is because the fish produce it a relative low rate compare to the bacteria comsumption rate, which is not true for nitrite.  when i started cycling my tank, i have also come to question the sacred texts  *twirlysmiley*.
if you think you fish is not effected, it is only because you can't effectively communicated with them, so until you caught a bible fish, the fish won't be able to tell you anything.  from scientific ponit of view, amonia and nitrite are toxic to live organisms, including your fish.  so whether you think your fish is ok or not, they are probably screaming out in pain.
stop the suffering and do a fishless cycled!  *thumbsupsmiley*

This questions has nothing to do with cycling my tank, thats been done several months ago. If you would read the question it talks about if anyone has ever seen the medication Maracyn-two increase there nitrite and nitrate levels. This medication increase my levels very high within a matter of 3 days without increasing my ammonia.

It is intresting that both your nitrIte and nitrAte went up.

Sometime, even if the company claims it(the medication) won't effect your biological filter, it can kill off good bacteria in the filter.

I at first thought your nitobacter were killed off, causing the nitrItes to increase.

That would be my guess, the med killed off some of your bacteria.

You say the disease is septicemia, as in a bacteria in the blood? What signs do the fish show?

Thanks for your responce. To your question, the signs my bala shark had was one eye was cloudy and it had red streaks by and through its tail fin. I finished the dossage did a 25% water change and clean my Emperor 400 filter well since it had some sort of slime algae on it. As for right now the levels have alot lower, but I will have to keep monitoring both the tank levels and my fishes condition.

Thanks Again!!!

i've had my ammonia and nitrite spike simply from cleaning the filter.  maybe it wasn't your antibiotic at all.

but you said the ammonia didn't go up.  hmmm.  ??? possible that the maracyn-two is specific enough that it killed some of the nitrite consuming bacteria, but not the ammonia consuming bacteria.  but then i think the nitrate would not have gone up.  hmmm.  ???

sorry, i guess i missed a line or two... :-X
still, amonia consuming bacterias usually grow much faster than the nitrite consuming bacterias.  that's probably why your amonia is low.  I have no experience with medications, so i will remain silent and save myself some embarrassment.

To v3x10e8, I hope I didn't sound snippy on my responce to you. I'm relatively new to this hobby, which I like alot. Its just been a rough couple of weeks with my tank, I lost several fish and then this jaunt with this medication. Its enough to make a person crazy!!!

Thanks for all responses!!!

don't worry, i am relatively hard to piss off...  *twirlysmiley*
like some1 else said, this hobby is addicting.  I have started my tank not long ago, but i only have bettas, which are very comfortable in a 10gal tank.  they made babies!!!

good luck with your tank and dont give up!!
