We have an XP3 for our 75 gal. and I noticed that the directions said we could add all this other stuff for added filtering or something, but it didn't say why or what for. I just added what was in the box. What is the other stuff and do I need it?

The media baskets in the XP3 are very customizable.
You can set them up any way you like.
For instance if the tank requires more bio, then have 2 baskets contain biological filtration.
1 basket would then contain floss for mechanical filtration.
If the tank needs meds or discoloration removed, then use carbon for chemical filtration.
The 3 types of filtration are biological, chemical & mechanical.
You can observe the tank and determine what it needs to operate effectively.

Since you have a newer tank I would set up more bio than anything.
Something like THIS and a level of floss to catch the larger matter. From what I heard you really don't need to use carbon unless you have really poor water quality or if you are trying to remove medication from the tank.

The reason why you want more bio than anything right now is it will help you stabilize your tank. In the future you could get rid of some of it once your tank fully cycles but right now the more bacteria growth you have, the better. The bio media is going to kill off the harmful toxin's in your tank, so adding more of those is beneficial to promote more beneficial bacteria growth.

I hope that helps. =)

Adding a lot of bio is never a bad thing.
Having plenty of bio allows a tank to have a good amount of stocking in it.
The more fish there are, the more need to eliminate waste.
Testing the water parameters often will give you an idea of the water quality.
Following the treads in water quality will assist your decisions about media selection.

I have an XP3 and here's what I have. Will give you an idea of one setup.

Bottom basket I have the 2 coarse sponges and 2 medium sponges that come with the filter for mechanical and biological filtration.
The middle basket I have lava granules and ceramic cylinders for biological filtration.
The upper basket I use filter floss, topped with the micro-pad that comes with the filter. This is purely mechanical filtering to polish the water.

I know when first using a new canister filter can be a bit intimidating but it really shouldnt be after too long. Reading this post, I just wanted to add, in the instruction manual you got with the canister there should be a section that talks about types of filtration and examples of those types that go into the trays if you happened to miss that part. You will love this canister, worth every penny.
