umm depends on what you're trying to mix...

Usually fish species have to be pretty closely related in order to interbreed and form hybrids. like you can interbreed platies and swordtails, because they are close in the same genus. Some cichlids can interbreed. That is how you get the infamous blood parrot cichlid. Many rainbowfish species can interbreed, that is how you get the two-dollar australian mutts.

With most fish it is hard enough to breed individuals of the same species, nevermind different types. And no, a small tank won't necessarily induce them to breed. Many fish require specific conditions that mimic nature in order to get them into breeding condition. This can mean certain nesting material, live foods, different temperatures, water changes, and different specs.

Its usually a lot more complicated than just having two fish in the same tank. Don't get your hopes up about crossing different species.
