mine is brown too, the brown is the healthy bacteria growing. My readings for tonight show me zero ammonia, zero nitrite, less than 1 ppm nitrate and a PH of 6.0 (normal for me)

Go go brown filters!

what kind of filter do you have? if you rinse your cartridges out between changes they last longer, and its a good idea pull them out and clean the inside of the filter too once in a while. It can get really gross otherwise, covered in algae

mine gets "scraped" in old tank water every few weeks, but otherwise stays pretty funky lookin. Works great and does the job.
