 some one said it may be holding eggs but the other lab is picking on it it's fins look a bit nippy and the third lab is ignoring it I thought the one that is carrying was male it has darker markings than the one that is pestering it and the darkest one of all the dominant male is ignoring it

I bought the fish as juvies I thought I had a male and two females then it looked like two males and one female but now one I thought was male has "eggs" and the one I thought was female is bothering it and the one that is defiantly male ignores it what's up?

o yea I also have 3red zebra and 3cobalt zebra alog with an african buterfly fish and a well manered golden CAE in the tank with the labs they totaly ignore the little yellow fish
water and all is good nice and hard just the way they like it I'm surprised but it dosn't seem to bother the CAE or the buterfly
do I have baby labs on the way? *celebrate

I laughed a little when I read your "I thought it was the male"-comment because I had the exact same thing happen to me. One day one of my boys was holding....imagine my suprise...he was in fact a she. The only 100% method of sexing yellow labs, as I've read and been told, is to compare the anus and vent. That is a complicated method. The only way I've been able to do it is to see them holding.

If the fish has stopped eating it is most likely holding. The one that is pestering her is probably the male that didn't get to impregnate her. Labs are harem-loving fish, so one male should really have 3 females around so that the girls don't get picked on all the time. If you have two boys and one girl, it is probably the snubbed boy that is chasing her around.

I think the best thing would be to remove the female to her own tank, if this isn't an option I would say no to the breeder net. I tried it when my first female got preggers and she really didn't like it, which leads to stress and miscarriage (aka she swallowed! ) Chances are her fins are going to get nipped a bit and she'll probably lose weight. After all she isn't eating and her primary objective at this point is to keep those eggs alive in her mouth.

Um...not sure what the little babies eat, but they can hold for like up to a month, which is long enough for someone else to chime in here and provide you with that info. I've had three pregnancies in my tank (two different girls), and none of them survived to the point that they've spit out fry. I read on a couple threads that if you get the fish young and if it is their first pregnancy, they tend to miscarry until they get a couple "trial runs" in.

Good luck with your expectant mother, and I would suggest that you consider taking back one of the boys and trying to get a couple more girlies. This would probably better your chances of a successful spawn in the future and lead to less stress on your little lady.

*thumbsups CONGRATULATIONS!

i'm prety shure the other one bothering her is a female it's a little younger and smaller than the carrying one but is extreamly light looking and the male is dancing at it I think it's just too young and she has allways sort of been a bully she bothers my female cobalts and nips at my african butterfly
maby I should put the one bothering her into a breader net to keep it away

I've mistaken territorial posturing displays for the breeding dance...they are incredibly similar in appearance... but you have the right idea..just keep an eye on them and again, good luck. :)

Wow! Guess what! I went to feed my fish today and a tinny blue spot came out to greet me. My cobalt zebras had fry and I didn't even know the female was holding it's about the size of my pinky nail I put it into a nice breeder box so it wouldn't get eaten it has a rock and some plant cover to hide in it seams happy and is picking food off the plant. I haven’t been able to find any other survivors I think the filter got them but it now has a sponge over it so it can't eat any more fry XD I'm glad the mother got it right the first time and didn't eat them or any thing hopefully she will be a good breeder and the other female will too
It’s my first fry not from a live bearer fish yay!…it needs a name
