Yet another Tank.

I have just started the set up of a new aquarium, 47" x 24" x 24".
Substrate consists of 25Kg of pond compost covered with 25 Kg of Silica sand.
I managed to find some old unused roofing slates and have stuck them to the back and sides.

Definately 3 adult angels, 1x 9 year old Hoplo, pair of Albino Ancistrus, the rest I will decide when I have a move around.

What is the purpose of the pond compost?
And will it not get mixed up over time with
the silica, i.e., vaccuming etc??

Hoplos are nice, I have 4 about 6" each.

I have used Silica sand for quite a few years now and you only need to syphon off the mulm from the surface.
The pond compost is to give the plants nutrients and something to root into properly.

do you go out and dig up the pond composite
from a local pond? Isn't that a good way to get
unwanted infestation, i.e., parasites etc....

And , how many cm each is each the layers....

and lastly, what is mulm?

The compost is what you buy for potting lilys for the pond.
Each layer is about 1".
Mulm is the waste solids that usually end up in the gravel.

I might remove the wood on the left as it looks a bit crowded, the catfish however would like it.

I'm using some nice pieces of natural driftwood as well, but find I can't get the water clear. I've got a 55g for my south americans (convicts, mostly, including a 6 inch male pink!), and the water has a permanent orange tinge to it. Is there any way to clear it up?

Activated Carbon in the filter will help to clear it.
