I get my nicer fish from local fish club auctions. My most recent livebearer purchases were my blue/green moscow guppy trio. They've already dropped the first batch of fry, so hopefully they'll be just as good looking as the parents.

As far as chain stores, I've found that my local Petsmart takes better care of their fish than Petco. Petsmart also seems to have more knowledgable employees, but that could vary by location.

Store: Pet Palace
Rating: 8472/10
Favorite Live Bearer: Guppies (the only ones I have, who's fry wont turn into a mid-day snack)
Fish Purchased: Every single one
Why: Of everywhere around here, they seem to have the most knowledge by leaps and bounds. Their workers work either freshwater, or saltwater..and each has its own manager. They have great prices, take excellent care of their fish...they give discounts to repeat customers...the whole 9 yards, maybe 10 even!

place petsmart
favorite livebearer: Mickey Swordtails (they're more expensive than the other types, but there's more of a variety in colors for them and they're not as common)
purchase: platties (mickey, sunset, red wag, high fin), guppies (reg & lyertail), mollies (black sailfin, lyertail (sp?)), varitous(sp?)
price rating:5
comments: Where I live Petsmart has a lot better quality fish than Petco. The Petco by my house usually has 3 or 4 tanks dealing with sickness. I only go to Petco if Petsmart doesn't have what I'm looking for. They're prices, however, are usually about the same.
