Zebra Danios in a 10 gallon? (and general questions)

I have one lonely danio in my 46 gallon turtle tank. I introduced friends for it on many occasions, unfortunately they all dissapeared within a few days, all during the night. I am actually suspecting my huge comet goldfish of eating them, as my turtles didnt notice them and they aren't active during the night.
I turned on the room lights today while it was dark and saw the danio in place (rare) and not moving much. It seemed to sort of shimmer and I thought the temperature had fallen too low (71 degrees). Do they do this at night to rest or sleep? If so, they coulda def. been eaten then.
SO, now I want to move it into my 10 gallon tank filtered by a penguin bio-wheel 150 (powerful filter!*thumbsups ). I'll probably get it as many friends as my tank can hold, (if any??) I currently have a few fancy guppies and two corydoras in there. How many? Suggestions?

I was told that you should not mix tropical fish with goldfish cause they are pigs and will eat anything. I cant see the danio eating the other fish as they are supposed to be good community fish. I would remove your goldfish to another tank or start your danios in another tank.

Also,In my experience You should avoid keeping danios on 1 or 2's as they tend to skulk away. Keep them in I'd say 5-6's or more.

As a rule of thumb you should keep 1 inch of fish per gallon.

I hope I helped you out!

He he - I'm sure the RES ate the danios. They'll seem like they're not interested in a fish, but then at a particular moment they'll change their mind and decide to eat. Goldfish don't usually eat other fish.

It would probably be better for the danio to be moved to the 10-gal, but that tank is already pretty full...so it will be difficult to add any danio buddies.

Good luck!

If you have less than 6 danios in one tank they won't "skulk away" they will dart like maniacs across your tank non stop! Danios are called perpetual motion fish, so obviously from the name they are very active. Danio's are also a schooling fish, which means they feel most natural in groups of at least 6 or more. Ideally you would want 10+, and 20 danios makes for a great school! Danios will also be more "relaxed" and less stressed when there is at least 6 of them together.
