Some Non-Rift Lake Africans

Ok, so these photos aren't very good but they're good enough for me since these guys are rediculously shy of the cam.
So here you go!

Anomalochromis thomasi male. You may notice he's missing an eye. He's missing both eyes actually but I've had him for over 8 months and so far he's been doing great. He lives in a 5.5gl with some female bettas.

A. thomasi female. She's a punky little thing.

Pelvicachromis pulcher female. About to POP! She's been trying really hard to grab the attention of her new man.

Krib male. He's not as nice as my prevous male overall but he's got some nice red in his fins.

The silvery blue on that thomasi is very very cool. Looks like he's doin' pretty good for himself even with his sight deficit!

The female krib looks like she is pouting....hehehe

Matt, they're as good the second time around as they are the first time :p . That's why I plan to keep at least a pair for as long as I keep fish. They're just fun. Classic. Like Cons!

You know, I bought only two of the thomasi (all I could afford). They turned out to be male and female but the male had to go blind! :(
Even is his blindness didn't impair his ability to spawn it wouldn't work. The female seems to sense his disability and treated him VERY unkindly for it before I seperated the two.
Based in her alone I'd say they were pretty tough customers. She has no problem letting a fish 4 or 5 times her size know who's boss and he's no priss either. *thumbsups

Freddy, he sure is and I hope it stays that way. :D

straitjacket,

Lol...I love how you say "these photos aren't very good," and then they're basically stunning. :p

Nice fish...makes me miss my kribs. The pics aren't too shabby either. ;)

Well compared to pics like Matt's and Aaron's mine are about as stunning as burry phone cam shots. :p
Doesn't help that I have a very short attention span when it comes to the technical mumbo jumbo on how to get that perfect picture. I'm more into the fish than I am the photography though so I'm satisfied.
Thanks a bunch BV! *SUPERSMIL

I love it! A great shot and modest.

She hasn't popped. First of all they can't agree on a spawning site and second, she seems to be absorbing the eggs. Main reason I just HAD to get that photo of her was because she looked so damn huge. If I'd waited the picture might have come out better but she wouldn't be quite so...ahem...rotund. :D
Behaviorally, it doesn't get much more dramatic than kribs. She wasn't as sweet and patient with her previous male as she is with this one. With her previous male they were baby machines but had a lot of domestic disputes between them, just like their parents. On one week, off the next, fighting, making up, the other man or a mistress...always something going on. Gotta love 'em!

This just makes me laugh! That's why I love cichlids...they have great personalities and interesting behaviors/relationships. I have two female yellow labs and one big male, and it is great to watch courting behavior. One girl is a "Loosy Goosy" (five pregnancies) and the other one is a "Gertrude the Prude" (two pregnancies). It's really rewarding when you get to know your fish's individual personalities! Little soap opera stars! *laughingc

Little soap opera stars! *laughingc
That's exactly how I think of them!*laughingc
A member on another site I frequent had kribs who could never decide whether they loved or hated eachother. The conversation would go on and on. I told her something along the lines of "who needs soaps when you've got kribs?!". Same with other cichlids too. :D
I have some haps with that same situation! I bought a trio of Hemitilapia oxyrhynchus. One of the females was always holding and making the male a proud papa. The other was such a prude she made me doubt she was a female at all. I actually thought she was a subdom male in female dress until she proved herself female when she held once, for the first and seemingly last time ever. I lost the "willing" female during my move and am stuck with the prude as the only partner for my male. Lately the male's been trying soooo hard to get that female to spawn but she just doesn't want anything to do with him. I think it might be the end of that breeding project but at least it's fun to watch the male dress up real nice and put on a fantastic show. It's like the more she declines the harder he tries! lol

Classic mistake...that poor bugger doesn't stand a chance.

Man, now I'm really missing my kribs. They weren't quite so dramatic though. Basically they just paired up right away and were like the 'perfect' couple. If there were any kinks in their relationship, they sure did a good job of keeping them in the closet, so to speak. :p
