Even though it may cost a good bit, getting a group is better especially with juvis. They grow up in a school and feel safer, won't stress as easy. Also with more fish you have a greater chance of getting a pair, especially since discus are almost impossible to sex without seeing them breed.

I think you should also consider who is going to be taking care of the fish and the amount of care required and if whomever is doing it is going to be up to the task. Discus are pretty sensitive, (right?), and sound like they might require closer attention than the pretty resilient Oscar.

If it was me though: Discus! ;)

55 Gallon is not big enough for an oscar. Go with discus, just make sure you have enough time to do water changes.

Not true, Missdixie and Katie are keeping oscars in a 55gal.
Well if they jumped off a bridge would...

It depends on the footprint of the tank...i remember seeing in one of the recent oscar threads that someone had a different footprint than a standard 55. I would not suggest an oscar in a regular 55 at full size, it would barely be able to turn around.

The discus idea would be nice if you want to put some extra effort in. What about some smaller 'wet pet' ish fish? Like JD's, acaras etc.
