I have a spare 12 gallon that is not set up and just laying around. I want to breed some cherry shrimp in there, but i was wondering if...

1. do i really need a heater? My betta tank has no heater and the temp is at 80.5 f and the light hasnt been on today.

2. seeing as they dont produce that much waste, i was thinking of using just a small internal filter, is that ok?

im trying to reduce the electricity that im using because i have 5 tanks and if i set up this one it will be six. So just a small light a filter will be fine, right?

thanks for the help :)

1. You probably won't need a heater in the summer. In the winter, it would depend on how cold your house gets at night. As long as the temperature swings day to night are only a few degrees, the shrimp won't have a problem.

2. A sponge filter works well. Watch out for anything that has holes more than about a millimeter in diameter, as baby shrimp are easily sucked up into filters.

Running six tanks takes up less electricity than watching an hour's worth of television.

Lotus is spot on about the fry getting into tiny spaces.
As long as your water temperature stays above 72F or so, you should not have any problems.

Do note, at lower temperatures, the shrimp tend to show less color.
