I recently bought two cons hoping for a pair.I have noticed that the supposed male was starting to get an orange belly.[i thought females only got orange bellies?]Also they chase eachother around the tank and when they get close the actual female turns on her side.Whats this mean, should i take precation just in case they get to aggressive?

Yeah, I'd like to see pics.

With cons, especially if you're trying to force a pair, you should always be prepared to take "precautions" in case they get too aggressive - either in the form of a divider handy or a spare tank to separate the two.

First one is definatly a female, but the second its kinda hard to tell, but I'm going to guess female. You can KINDA see some orange on the belly, or it could be my eyes playing tricks

Not 100%...Body shape looks like a male to me...
First is for sure a female.
I completely agree! *thumbsups

My monitor might be darker or something, so I'm not able to see the orange spots on the con in the first pic, but judging by its shape/finnage alone I'm about 99.9% sure that it is a female.

The con in the second pic looks male to me based on body shape/finnage...just look at the hump that appears to be developing on its head. Even though there appears to be somewhat of an orangish/yellowish hue to the belly area, it doesn't appear to be the same sort of orange scales that you would expect from a female. I'm about 90% sure it's a male.

K ill just have to keep an eye on them.If your still taking suggestions i would go with cons in your 56gal.They are SUPER cool.
Cons are awesome, I agree, but not what I'm looking for, for this tank.

Sinister has me thinking about Green Terrors again, I'd completely forgotten about them until she posted new pics!

Okay now i have a new question. My female has turned almost all black but still has her orange spot and is constantly chasing my big male, i dont think he likes being chased though because shes flaring her gills but hes not.The male has also turned a little paler and hides from the female. What going on?Should i separate them?

I have convicts and love the hell outa them. I have them in both of my tanks.
In my 40g breeder is a 5.5" black male with his mate a 3.75" black female. And an 8" Jaguar and 3 plecos.
In my 29g is a 3" black male, and both of his mates 2" pink females and a pleco.

Orange stomachs aren't always accurate. I thought I had two females since both of them had orange bellies...then I was shocked they laid eggs.

True enough, Oreo...some cons that have a bit of orange on their bellies when they're young do turn out to be males---however...

Were the eggs fertile?
They could have both been females, which sometimes pair-up---esp. when no male is present. Females don't need males around to lay eggs. ;)

That's what my mom had thought at first too...until the eggs turned into a big cluster of newly hatched fry.
