i was planning on getting either a 40gal breeder tank or a 50gal that was slightly higher...and housing one med sized cichlid in it like a yellow lab

the reason i would like to consider this is on the books i have been reading thus far the medium cichlids bond with their owners better and are like a wet pet

is that a bad idea?

Nope not a bad idea at all, I just wouldnt choose a yellow lab for a "wet pet" myself personally.
I have my 58gal with an Oscar in it as a "wet pet" and in my 33gal a Severum. But anyways, go ahead

Not every cichlid comes under the "wet pet" term. Wet pet is generally used to describe large cichlids, such as Midas, Jaguars, Terrors, Texas, Jack Dempseys, etc, that have a lot of individual personality and intelligence. I mean, yellow labs have personality and intelligence, don't get me wrong, but they're not what would be considered a wet pet. Also, mbuna IMO shouldn't be kept solo. They do much better in groups (well planned out, compatable groups) than they ever would on their own.

Another question would be, what fish do you typically have access to at the LFS? Because we could easily go naming off random cichlids that would work, but you'd have no access to them :p
By the way, Spirulus are so cool!

Well that opens many doors, have a look around Aquabid ( or other sites ) and if you find any cichlids that you are interested in, post them here! We're glad to help!

skratikans,

If those fish you named off are pretty much all you can find locally, then I'd definitely recommend going the online route. There are some reputable sources out there for cichlids---Jeff Rapps' Tangled Up in Cichlids being one of them, based on everything I've come across---and I'm sure some other more experienced cichlid folks have some other places they can recommend as well.

Wet pet is generally used to describe large cichlids, such as Midas, Jaguars, Terrors, Texas, Jack Dempseys, etc, that have a lot of individual personality and intelligence.
And by "etc" you would mean, oh I dunno...oscars, for example?
