new filter keeps cutting off

ihave a Tetra Whisper Power Filter, Model 20...i just bought it yesterday, it works fine..but it keeps turning off and i have to move the 'wonder tube' up and down for it to turn back on...whats the problem

Is the whole unit shutting down or is the impeller just stopping? If the impeller is stopping take it out and inspect it for chipped plastic in the fins or damage to the lower portion with the magnant.

Depending on the impeller, you might consider buying a whole new power part of the filter (the black part that has the power, that attaches to the box of the filter).

I have that same model except it's a 30 not a 20... Do what chiclid-man said to do with the impeller...

I agree with TRe. If this is a saltwater setup you don't need to have a filter like that anyways. What you really need to have are a couple of powerheads to provide water movement through the tank.

Take it back to the store, and tell them it's faulty. They should give you a new one, or better yet, exchange it for either a Maxijet or Koralia powerhead (or two).

yeah i have a live rock in the tank...

i think its just the impeller, when it stops i just move it up and down and it starts back up - its been fine today, i went to work at 830 and just got home, its 5pm..and it was still on..

would having sand in the tank have anything to do with it?

Sounds like you should take it back . it should not do that . i had a used 30 model that still runs strong today . take it back and get a power head . like a maxijet 1200 or a korlina if your LFS has them this are the best ! .
