I have a chance to get a 75G pretty nice oak stand for $100. It doesn't have a solid top, just the rim though. I have never had a non solid top before. What is everyones thoughts? Can it be modified to have a solid top? How strong is it? Any comments would be great. Thanks.

Just cut a board to fit in the place of the solid top.
I have seen many like what you describe over the years.
In fact, I just sold a 55 like that, this past weekend.

Well, if you look at the bottom of your tank, you will see that all of the weight is distributed along the perimeter. The glass sheet that composes the bottom of the tank cannot support the weight of the tank when full, so that's the reason why they are designed that way.

There's nothing wrong with having a completely solid sheet of wood as the top of the stand, but it's unnecessary from a structure standpoint. It doesn't make the stand stronger.

Okie Dokie. That is what I thought, but for some reason my mind just wasn't willing to wrap around that the way it should have. Guess this means my 75G dream will be starting :D

I'm keeping my eyes open for a 75g tank as well. I found a nice solid wood dresser for $20 that would be perfect for holding one. The top of it is 50" x 19". It's holding my 29L and my 10g QT right now. If I can find a 75g for the right price, I'll build something else for the 29.

If anyone lives near Atlanta, there is a 120 Gallon Marineland aquarium trimmed in black with glass tops and lights. Black cabinet stand included with 4 shelves and double door under aquarium storage for $175 on ebay p/u only. I'd grab it, but, my hubby says OMG we have no room for that. I can't make him understand that yu can always make room..hee hee hee

Happy Happy, I just got a brand new 75 G with lights (stock), lids (stock), 250 w Stealth heater, and stand (oak laminate..not great, but ok) and a aquaclear 300 for $165.00 I'll have to upgrade things like the filter and lights (eventually), but $165!! And my hubby said it was ok..I think he feels sorry for me still recovering from my tonsilectomy...but I am not gonna argue. His moment of weakness is my gain...hee hee hee. I did have to agree to break down the 20...but that can't happen right away anyhow ;-)
