I have the Penguin 350 bio wheel and the wheels do not spin. I assume that it is the water flow, but the filters are clean and the inputs are clear. Has this happened to anybody? Is there a chance that the wheels are too small?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Did you get the wheels with the filter?

The one on my 20g stopped spinning recently. I got freaked out but it turned out it was kind of fraying on the end and some got caught on the "reptile cage cover mesh thingy" that closes the gap by the filter.

Do they spin when you push them, or are they totally stuck?

I had trouble with water flow on my 200 when I got it. I took off the extention thing on the intake and it took care of that real quick. You might want to give that a try.

Not sure about the Penguin 350 bio wheel, but in mine, one of the "gears" that the bio wheel sat in had fallen out. The "gear" sits in the groove on the filter, and is simple a little plastic piece that cradles the end points on my wheel. Anyway, when missing one, the wheel wouldn't turn well at all. Here is what I am talking about. Bio Wheel Bearing 2pk All Penguins, Hex 5, System3 or in my case Emperor Bio Wheel Bearings, Eclipse 1, 2, 3. Sorry if I didn't make too much sense.

They do spin. Sometime on their own. It is hard to explain, one will spin for a minute then stop. It seems like there is not enough pressure or the wheels are just a little too small. I guess my best bet is to go get a couple of new ones and see if that helps. Does anyone know if there is a way to increase the pressure?

Thanks for all of your help

The Bio-Wheel doesn't need to spin much to be effective. As long as it's moving at least occasionally, it's nothing to worry about. You can check the axels to see if there is debris on them.

If your flow is slower than before, you may need to clean out your impeller.

Take out the Filter cartridge...does it spin normally? If so, then install a new one to see if that helps eliminate a flow problem internally.

Also could be an issue with the intake tube not pulling enough flow due to a clog or something. Like TabMorte had with his, you may not even need the extension depending on how deep your tank is.

If taking out the filter cartridge doesn't help, then LMarts is prob correct.//one of those bearing may not be seated properly, or has a tooth damaged, clogged, etc.

You may also want to remove the gray thing that snaps into place on the mid-level strainer.

I took that off when I got mine because it didn't look like it really served a purpose other than to restrict intake at that point. So by removing it, you may notice more water flow, and thus more pressure on the wheels.

That extention thing I got rid of the whole entire thing and my filters worked SO much better since then. The guy at my LFS said the only people who he ever hears about problems with the bio wheels are ones who have it on and honestly unless your tank is super super deep you really really don't need it. Even with out it my intake is half way down the length of my tank and that's deep enough for me. (And infact works better because now I don't suck up sand).
