I have a pair of convicts and a pair of neon jewels in a 49gal. THe convicts layed eggs last week and protected them for two days but then they ate the eggs on the fourth day I got home and there were no eggs left. why would the parent convicts protect the eggs just to eat them later??

They might not have been good eggs. If it is the first time that the female laid eggs alot of times they are not able to be successfully fertilized. Wait a few weeks they will probably have more eggs and the results shoulf be better.

Well i see 2 possible things here. The convicts ate the eggs because they are inexperienced breeders right now, or the jewels ate the babies when the convicts weren't looking.

Sure the convicts didn't move them somewhere? Had this happen many times. Once i discovered and observed the eggs they moved them overnight to a new location.

Yeah my Jewels move there eggs from cave to cave every other day it seems. They have picked 2 or 3 good locations and shift the eggs around.
