Hey guys,

I'm not officially sure how many gallons my tank holds. We were just at the LFS and saw tanks that appear to be smaller than my tank, however are more gallons which I thought mine was 10. Here are the dimensions:

24"W x 14"H x 12"D

Any ideas?

Multiply length by height by width in inches. That gives you cubic inches.

Divide that figure by 1728 (the number of inches in a cubic foot) and that gives you cubic feet.

Multiply cubic feet by 7.48 (the number of gallons in a cubic foot) and that gives you gallons.

Example: My tank is 48" long, 18" high and 11" wide. (interior dimensions)

48 x 18 x11 = 9504 cubic inches
9504 ÷ 1728 = 5.5 cubic feet
5.5 x 7.48 = 41.14 gallons

Now all you need is a tape measure and a calculator (or pen and paper) and you can calculate the volume of any tank you come across.

Yes, it probably is too much thinking, but not too hard to do if you understand the concept. Anyone interested in calculating fluoridation dosages?
(Just kidding. I'm actually quite lousy at math)

I looked at a used plexi-glass tank and quickly figured it to be an eighty gallon unit. Passed on it because it looked pretty scratched up.
