Greetings All- I was at my LFS this weekend and the store has a freshwater stingray.

Does anyone have experiences with freshater SRs? I am not sure of the species but will call the LFS tomorrow.

I have a 60g tank. Is this a situation where the SR will be okay 'today' but I will need 125g+ in a near future?

Thanks!!

I researched these a while ago..I went to the texas state aquarium this weekend and saw a couple on exhibit. While I would still love to have one after seeing them I truly believe that these should not be kept in ANY but the larget home aquarium..the ones they had were absolutely beautiful and extremely large. One was a occelated (sp?) do not know the exact species , the other one dont know. They were larger than I thought they got. I do not think that a 125 would even be enough for one to truly be happy in or for the keeper to truly value the beauty of one.

There are many types out there brian. :p Im not sure much on them but I do think there are some smaller ones. However I do know that the tank bottom needs to be open and roomy. A 60G tank may or may not be suitable.

I have found sites saying the smallest is 18" in diameter... that would be about the size of the ones they had on exhibit.. like I said I have researched them in the recent past.. 18" doesnt sound that large until you figure that is bigger than a large pizza from a common restuarant then you also add on 2ft of tail. There may be smaller "dwarfs" out there but if so I couldnt find anything when I researched them. If you find out any smaller species please post here as I would be very interested also.

Just found this link http://www.raylady.com/ seems to be fairly through

Don't ask me what species it is but there are some that only get up to 8 inches. It's not any of the so-called teacups or the others that are readily available.

Even then, at 8 inches..just the way they swim, your going to need at least a 125 for the smaller ones and a 220 for anything else. Really I guess a 220 would be better even for the 8 inch guy.

Small rounded kiddy pools i've seen used as well. What is the width of the 60gal? 24" width would be ideal.

Potamotrygon motoro, Potamotrygon leopoldi, and Potamotrygon reticulata are probably the most common in the aquarium trade, and some of the smallest.

You might get away with a reticulata (teacup stingray) in there....but idk. I'd guess it depends on the size already, the fish in the tank already, and how soon you are getting the bigger tank.

the motoro is the one i found at 18" in diameter. reticulata at 14" hell even the teacups i could find online where 10 - 14in adult size.... still IMO with the fact they live and cruise on the bottom way to big for anything less than 200+.

Like I said I would love to have one myself but I just dont see someone providing a good life in a 48L x 18W tank even at 14in to me that is very cramped quaters. Just my opinion.
