There's a 20G tank at my father's office that contains a betta, some otos, and a couple different schooling fish. The only thing the betta gets fed is tropical flakes. Can they survive on regular flakes or do they have to have betta pellets?
As long as it gets some flakes it should be fine. Pellets are just easier to count out when feeding a single fish. The pellets float longer so a slow moving betta can get to them before the fall to the bottom. The most important thing for bettas is enough protein.
