Project Help!

Soooooooo, first off, sorry I haven't been here consistently. I've been busy with school and such.

Anyway, I am taking english 102 at the community college and have to write an essay. I chose a thesis of something like "allowing pet stores to sell iridescent sharks isn't good for the fish's health, is a bad experience for the customer, and creates new problems for the store." That's not it word for word, but it's along those lines.

PROBLEM: I need at least one BOOK to cite. I can't find anything! Does someone know of a book that deals with the selling of monster fish? It doesn't specifically have to be about iridescents; I'll cover that with other sources. I just need a book that in some way says it's bad for stores to sell big fish... TIA

you cant use forums, or online articles?
Yes I can. In fact, that is where almost all my information is coming from. The requirements however want at least one book used. If it's an online book somewhere or simply a quote that you can read my out of your own, that's fine. All I need is a quote for an actual book. Unfortunately, not many people write books about subjects like why moster fish shouldn't be sold.

I would never cite online forums or articles in a paper if you want it taken seriously. Stick to published work. Take a trip to the library maybe? I know that bites.............wait a minute is that a first year class?...If it is just make up a book lol *laughingc

good luck

Online articles are fine, as long as it comes from a reputable source... such as other student organizations or marine biologists, etc. I cited tons of work from Harvard.edu etc etc. Check out your library and see what you can find in the online catalog too, it's fine. I got away with a lot of sketchy resources when citing work though, and I was @ Drexel

Thanks, joe, I'll check into those!

Lol, yes, I know what you mean. I was little concerned about that as well, but I asked my instructor and he said it would be find. I told him that's all I could really find. So it's ok to go with forum articles. I realize that for something larger and in higher classes I would need better sources, but this is english 102 so it's not such a big deal. :) No, I can't make up my own book. :) Hehe.

Yeah he's probably right about using small-time sources for debates and such. Hell, I'm not going to court with evidence from an online forum, *laughingc

Another thing you could do is try to find some published work that just has straight facts about either iridescent sharks or fish keeping in general. There are plenty of books on aquariums and I'm sure there's at least one published piece of work on iridescent sharks, although that might be hard to find. I work at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and they have huuuuge books on the most obscure things and fish. It's actually quite strange. So, I'm pretty sure it exists somewhere. Maybe even an article of one that was caught, which highlights their size. Hope that helps...

EDIT: I just remembered something. My boss has a small book that has illustrations of EVERY known species of shark and a small snippit of information about each one. I'm not in that specific office right now and I can't remember the name but I can shoot her an email if you really need it.

Ooo, thanks. I've only go this so far: "jumbo fishes for the large aquarium" - Google Book Search but I guess I'd have to buy it to know what's inside! If I don't come up with at least one book by tomorrow, I'm going to broaden my thesis to just monster fish or something instead of specifically IDs. I really wanted to write about them though...:(

well if you wanted to do general tank busters, you should probably put these fish at your higest priority when talking about the subject:

Red Tail Catfish
ID Shark
Paroon Shark
Clown Knife
Arrowana
Pacu
Alligator Gar

These are probably the easiest ones for people to get their hands on. Usually the redtail cats and the IDs are sold as juves so people dont even know what they are getting themselves into
