You can keep the glass canopies on the aquarium. I have them on my 100g, and then have the fixture lying on top of it. Just keep the glass clean.

The question is, do I need to get something like this: Amazon.com: All-Glass Aquarium Versa-Top 16" Hinged Aquarium Cover, Black: Home & Garden except the right size of course for that new light to work?

Yup.

You could always do an open-top aquarium as well, just so long as your light fixture is the same length as your aquarium, and you get the legs for the fixture.

You could always build a canopy out of wood to go over your tank and light fixture.

I can't think of a way to get the fixture to work with your current lids... maybe an engineer can help? Afterall, I'm just a primitive geologist who likes to bang on rocks with hammers.

Ok, I'm looking at some sort of T5HO's, but first some questions...

Is there some kind of chart or guideline for how many w/g I should have for a standard 55g if I just want typically plants sold at Petco? I need a guideline of some sort so I can chose how many bulbs I need.

I just found a place that refills 5# tanks for $5!!! .

How long would a 5# last me approximately? If I run out of CO2, do I have to refill it immediately, or can the plants live without CO2 for a couple days?

That's a pretty sweet deal.

How long a 5# canister lasts is relative. I think I've had my 5# tank for either 4 or 5 months on my 100g, without refilling as of yet. I'd have to check my journal to see how long it's been set up.

Make sure you check for leaks whenever you set it up.


EDIT: I've had it since mid-December, so going on 5 months already. It'll last you a while with a 55, just so long as you don't have a leak, a good diffusor, etc.
