I have black convicts and they are acting very strange they are making holes in the gravel and laying in them. And if any of the other fish come near the holes they chase them away does anyone know what is going on? Also one of them have red spots on the belly it doesn't look like they got in a fight or anything but red spots do they have something that I have to treat them for? Anyone who can help it would be great.

Nothing special for Convicts. If you really want to keep as many of the fry as possible, then once they hatch move them to another tank, or move the eggs. But convicts spawn like crazy, and are pretty good parents once they figure it out and tend to take care of the fry pretty well.

Same here, I have 2 Africans and they do that same thing, I think it's def a territorial "making thier home" type thing. Its kind of fun to watch.. the red dot however I dont know, My biggest one has a white dot on his, but its normal.. so not sure.

well i recently learned from a debate that the female convicts have some color to really nice color, and now knowing this i think its sorta helps with this too. So if its down about a inch down the body or so like that its just hopefully the convicts color; if you notice any problems then it could be something else. But I'm guessiing everything is going alright.

Once the eggs hatch, give it about 72 hrs to see the 1st Fry.

B4 the eggs hatch you will likely see alot of digging big cups in your tank substate ( esp around any rocks or ornaments you might have ).
My Black Convics just produced their 2nd batch of fry. They are now in Day 3 end. There are about 40 of them all hovering around momma.

Don't worry about them being eaten as mom & dad will defend them to the death for usually at least the first 2 weeks.

They are usually GREAT parents at least for the 1st 2 weeks and often longer.

They are VERY territorial about parenting & will aggressively chase any other fish away from ( "Their side of the tank ).

They may appear to be eating the eggs or very newborn babies BUT NO>>>>
The collect the new fry in their mouths and spit them back into the " digged "Nest" until the get bigger ( about 2 weeks probably ).

During this 2wk period you really need to evaluate several things....

1) Do you want to separate the babies at 2 weeks into another tank? ( i use a huge fish net hanging into the 80 gal tank water and put them in there so they do not get eaten or sucked into the power filter. 2)Or...and u need 2 realize that the parents will spawn again in maybe about 3 -4wks so u will get even more babies.

( If the 1st fry are still around, then the parents may at this point begin to eat them preparing for the new breads arrival)!

What is the Tank Size for u ? ( how many gals? )?

How many other fish in the tank who will likely eat them?

In my case the tank is set up for South American Cichlids. I have 3 Smaller 1" Firemouth Cichlids + the Black Convic parents Male is med size at 3", mom small at 1.5" and now about 40 new fry in an 80 Gal Breeder Tank.

I guess I will leave the most of the babies in the main tank and see how many of them servive.

The 80 gals with tall bushy corner plants to hide in hopefully will be Plenty of room for at least some of them to servive I hope!

i may decide to pull out several of a few babies & let the rest survive if they are able.

Anyway...LOOOONNNNGGG winded post i know but there you have my humble observations

Good Luck
