So i have a beautiful dominant male German Blue Ram, very friendly (towards me at least) and loves the tank.

I just put in a very pretty female German Blue Ram in, in hopes that they would be making some babies eventually.

Problem is, the female is now swimming around the tank getting used to it, and the male, who is king of my tank is swimming near the top of the water level and it kinda worries me, why would he be doing this. if i get close to him he swims down and stays for a little then goes back to the top. He is not gasping for air or none of that sort he just looks up and stays up near the hood.

Any ideas on how the Mr and Mrs could ever be more than just friends and how to keep the male behaving normally?

Well after doing a water change last night i guess it was just too late for him, the dominant male ended up dying over night when i was sleeping. My levels seem about the same so i'm not sure really why all i can think of is stress.

stress to that degree? what did you do lludu, did you pu the ram in a washing machine? lol i doubt it was spontanious stress. i mean it dies that abruptly with nothing affecting it... did you inspect the fish to see if anything looked wrong on its body? autopsy?

yeah nitrate levels etc, all come up normal for my tank. nothing was raised. that is why i'm having the hardest time figuring this out
How did you test the water? 'nitrate levels etc, all come up normal for my tank.' doesn't really help. What is 'normal' for you tank for the levels of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

What actual numbers do you get for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate?

Sorry bout your ram.
I hope your 'normal' is 0ppm for ammonia and nitrites. Rams won't do well in water with any trace of ammonia or nitrites. Even nitrates need to be kept in check to some degree.
I've got the same question, How did you test the water?

And post the numbers, very important to be able to offer you advice.
