It's by no means a rule, but a safe guideline, and yess it would include fish such as tetras, danions and rasboras. Most people would, however, call this way of calculating what you can keep in a tank inaccurate.
yeah. i think if i added a couple schools, like 1 of 3 danios, 1 of 3 tetras, and like 2 rasboras with 1 swordtail i think i should be fine. i have double the filtration that i need and it keeps it pretty clean in there. plus if i already have the 5 otos between the oto's and my yoyos and my clown pleco they should be enough to keep my tank clean and keep levels down. i just would have to do more water changes more frequently and i should be fine. im not such a beginner anymore THANK GOD so i dont waste away a bunch of money
lol i added it up and i still wouldnt be overstocked anyways with those fish. i think i want to do 3 zebra danios, 3 cardinal tetras, 3 xray prestilla tetra, like 2 harlequin rasboras, 1 swordtail and that should be fine
rather than getting a bunch of little schools, you should get one BIG school, it looks much better. And harlequin rasboras really should be kept in groups of 3+, otherwise they are stressed out and their color is faded, and less coppery.
oh i know i just kinda want more of a variety of color options. i know you like a larger school and i know it would look way awesome. im gonna do more of that when i go 180g or larger. ill do like 3-4 schools of different types of fish and keep them in groups of 20 or more. for what i want to do im probably gonna need a 250g. because also on top of that i want 20 oto's for algae control and tending to a fully planted tank and like 10 botia striata loaches for snail control, a bn pleco, couple dwarf gouramis, couple swordtails, red tail and albino rainbow shark then i havent really figured if im gonna do anymore than that. in this thread ( http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/freshwater-general-discussion/59709-updated-pics-55g.html ) explains how i want to do the layout for the larger tank. then i think once i do that the 55g is gonna be turned into a saltwater work in progress tank (more than likely if i had a tank 6 times the size the one i have now i would put in all my time and effort into that one then when im satisfied start on the 55g for saltwater.)
red tails only get to 4" and my albino rainbow shark is at around 6" which is fully grown and neither have a mouth big enough to fit a 3/4" fish in their mouth the only thing i really have to worry about is the sharks getting aggressive and nipping at the peaceful fish so im not fully sure on the whole sharks idea yet
ok, hope you work it all out
i've also read that max size for rainbow, and red-tail albino sharks is 6" but some members on this forum will say that these fish can grow much larger... just wanted to pass some info along
I said before I've seen a professional at a LFS keep maybe 4-5 inches per gallon in an aquarium. Very valuable fish too, about 30 fish at $15 a piece.
But, this person was a very experienced pro who had massive filtration and fed lightly. The "one inch per gallon" rule rarely applies, in my opinion. And if you have high maintenance or very territorial fish like I do, forget it. I have 4-5 gallons per inch in my 100 and it is crowded.
