Yesterday I purchased my first fish since my commercial breeding business went under in 2005. He is a wonderfully colored Betta named Fred. Photos will follow as soon as I figure out how to work my camera phone or as soon as my wife gets home.

My wife is now mega-eager to have me set up my other tank so she can watch even more pretty fish. She even volunteered to purchase the filter and heater out of her own "fun money" budget instead of mine  (now that is love).

I hope I haven't created a monster!

he is a veiltail peach/pink bodied, maroon butterfly finned cambodian. he appears to have an almost double tail, although uneven...that usually means he carries the gene but not 2x copies of the gene for double tails. I am having the local fish store order 3 female "crowntails", which they say many times Come in as doubletails. I am hoping for a light bodied female or a solid flat red female with no steel shine.

YES! Are you by any chance looking at breeding teh Betta again?
Can't wait to see what kind of Betta you found :)
And yes, I am restarting my betta breeding programme. I am going to play with some standard commercially available veiltails to get my fish legs back, make a few hundred, then I am going to order 2 male mustard gas and 4 female mustard gas from uncle junkin with the fish money.

Special Fred swimming

Special Fred notices the red colored power button on the Coffee pot.

I call him special fred because he is just a little bit "special" in the head. he got a bigger home than the tiny jar he was in at the petstore and he refused to eat for 2 days.

darn...maybe the next one will do better?
must have been weak stock..
yeah he had a buncha uneaten food in his gravel. The wife thought he was eating it but he was spitting it back out. I know it isn't my water because the rosy reds in the bucket seem happy as anything and they are more easily effected by water conditions than a betta.
