It really depends....
Some Betta's will start blowing bubble nests right away or it might take a while.
I had one Betta that began blowing bubbles right away and another one that wouldn't blow bubbles until a female was in sight.

yes usually introducing a female next to his tank for even an hour would excite him enough to blow a nest. some bettas will make the nest after water changes.

generally once a male Betta breeds, he will be more inclined to make regular bubble nests in hopes of "attracting another female"

I'm not saying that your male will not make a bubble nest even if the above things are not done. it's an instinct that may appear at any time, generally when the Male is happiest (although I have seen males make nests in mere cups)

another thing, if your male can see another male even for a few minutes, he will also want to make a nest.

Jamie, are you trying to rate your Betta's happiness by it's frequency to make bubblenests? if so then I wouldn't worry too much whether he makes them.

just don't worry about it, you may even get a pleasant surprise when he does make one :)

o and another trigger would be rainy or snowy weather. low air pressure might cause males to build the nest because in Thailand their breeding season is the rainy/monsoon season.
