I got my new otos in the mail today, all the way from Peru (well, imported from Peru, I got them from Oregon, USA). Otocinclus cocama, and it looks like at least 3 girls in the batch of 10! Hope to be posting in the breeding section someday with them.
otocinclus cocama is quite expensive per fish usually. $10 per fish is common, what deal did you get , Orange?
Theyre really nice Zeeeeeebra patterned otos. too bad sources say they are rather sensitive otos even in the oto category, and are short lived in captivity.
Cant wait for some more pics of them, Orange
Do they by any chance get the tank with my HC ?

I've not had any losses (crosses fingers/toes/eyes). I'll get more pics hopefully this weekend. Have to use hubby's laptop since he broke the only SD card reader I had to read my camera's card.
No, they are not in with your HC. They are still in a bare QT tank for another week.
Your HC is in with 11 Otocinclus vittatus which were showing signs of chasing/breeding this morning. I'm converting the tank to very soft water in the comming weeks (as soon as I figure out how quickly I can alter the water without stressing anyone). Gotta love RO water! It is supposed to help with hatch rates.
im glad mine were truly otos because i got them from petco. did you pick your other otos up from one of your breeders you know??
i was laughing because everywhere around town wants to sell an oto for 3.95 unless you want to take a chance at petco or petsmart and you may get a cae. and all the ones petco and petsmart sell are usually so tiny its hard to differentiate between whether they are or not and whether or not you can trust the sales associate.

Even tiny, an oto is an oto. I've seen pics of those less than one week old, there is no mistaking it as an oto. As for trusting a sales associate, I do not. Not a fish sales associate, not a car sales associate, not a college admissions advisor (sales associate too). They all want your $$$.
hey now i sell furniture but i dont necessarily want your money. im not high pressure at all. if you buy you buy if you dont you dont. thats the way i look at it.
well then is it sae mistaking for an oto. i thought i read somewhere that you had to pay close attention because you could get mistaken. maybe im wrong but i thought i read on here to do research before you go get them because they can look like something else as a juvenile.
Nope, SAE don't have sucker mouths . . . . CAE do. But still lots of people - and fish store sales peole - think, an algae eater is an algae eater is an algae eater.
And inexperienced people *might* confuse a very young CAE with a very young oto, because of the sucker mouth thing.
that might of been it. i never really researched them at the time until i went and got me some but i thought i had read some threads on here with people doing it that way but to come to think about it they were inexperienced hobbyists or hobbyists that didnt know about that field like me
Noooooooooooo. I think those fish employee noobs think that "algae eater" always = catfish. Which is why I once got pointed at a 4" synodontis catfish when I asked for an otocinclus ._.
I was like "ORLY? This is an oto you say? What else can you tell me about them - are they compatible with Jaguar cichlids? They are? Wow never knew that .
