I asked that question because the stocking is much more dependent on the surface area of your tank rather than volume. As an example, if you have two tanks of 5g but one is much taller than the other, you will find that the taller one won't be able to handle as much stock. Of course this doesn't mean you can get away with more stock with same filters - you will still need to get an appropriate filter and water changes but at least these tanks will give you that option if you choose to go with it.

I suspect your tank height is much taller than a typical 5.5g tank. If I recall correctly, betta in a 5.5g tank has some cushion if you keep it alone.

^^ thats a warning I got (I was fiddling around with a 10 gallon stocking) and I'm pretty sure that the female swordies grow the same 4" as the male. Maybe in some cases even bigger, but definitely not smaller.

Hmm, how come there's so much variances on the net for their sizes?

So which is correct, 2.5 or 4.0 for the female? I think we all agree that male is 4.0.

I just checked Google, it appears that the general consensus is that females are generally even slightly larger than males... But not all sites agree to this.

Those are long gone, only seen in the past when they are really popular

Yeah. I am going to change back to 4 inches for the female. Actually, if male and females have the same size, I don't see a need to separate between male and female so I might as well delete the female entry, and change the male one back to a generic sword.

but males have an aggression factor. I think you should still differentiate between male and female then.

for you information male swordtails can be more aggressive than a female plakat betta, especially if denied contact with female swordtails.

Currently, even with one common entry, it will point out about male to female ratio. But I think you are referring to the fact that male sword should be marked as more aggressive species period?

PlanetCatfish only has 10 species of Scleromystax listed, but I think the most important ones to have are barbatus, lacerdai, macropterus, and prionotos. In fact, those are the only 4 they have data for.

Yes . I'd say same as older Mollies, if not more. or basically just have a little aggression note to anyone who tries to put only male swordtails into a tank with no female swordtails or platies.
