i am going on vacation for 5 days. w/the aquarium is it ok to keep the light off while gone?

are you going to be feeding these fish somehow while you are gone?

no do to the problems i have been having with high ammonia..... i'll feed them right before we leave. i was thinking they would be ok till i got back.. unless the neighbor can do it a very small pinch half way threw my vacation. but wasn't planning on feeding them while gone. what do u think.?? with the problem i was having i thought it would be a good idea not to feed them..

It should be okay to keep the light off while you are gone, if you have any plants I'd invest in a timer. They're not expensive, you can find them at most hardware stores.

so will it be ok not to feed them do to the tank problems i have been having w/ ammonia problems. and feed them before i leave than when i get back?

How long are you going to be gone? If it's only for a week feeding them before you leave and then when you get back should be fine.

You should be okay with five days. Although, with your ammonia problem I'd see if you can find someone to come check on them periodically and do a water change if necessary.

Yikes, if you or someone else isn't there to do your 25% minimum water changes daily, your fish will probably be dead by the time you come home. If you aren't super attached to the three fish you have (a betta and two tetras, right?) you should take them back to your fish store for a future credit and do a fishless cycle with your tank. It will be much easier on the fish, and you.
Edited to add - you don't have to change water daily once your tank has re-established itself through a new cycle. But right now, your tank is extremely sensitive and needs daily maintenance to preserve the lives of your fish.

I guess I should have tried to find the thread they were asking about.

I agree with lauraf, I would ask a neighbor to come over and change 25% of the tank water every day while your gone. If that's not possible, I would either return the fish or try to find them a temporary home in a suitable established tank until yours cycles.
