I like the planted idea! In the end, though, the decision is not up to me, but i can plant seeds ;) I think it's veering towards something cichlid

Itd be cool to do a Heavily Planted Tropical Community :) i also think you should look into Fire Eels, they are so cool and they'l let you pet them with time
Not to hijack but you really shouldn't pet your fish, it damages their protective coat which would normally be blocking our bacteria etc.

They are however wonderful fish and could work well, though personally I'd opt for a much bigger tank for any type of eel, they grow to nearly 18 inches if well cared for. They also love to burrow in the substrate and so plants are not a good option for this fish as they'd be up-rooted.

Cichlids would be nice, if you go for some nice malawi mbunas it would work very well. Alternatively, you could cross the atlantic for some of the smaller central american cichlids, for example firemouths, or some of the dwarf cichlids such as rams or apistogrammas if you want some fantastic colours and patterns.

Yeahh, rams have always been a dream of ours. And the apistogrammas are spectacularly colored, maybe even some kribensis.......

well ABSOLUTE VERY FIRST THING TO DO IS CYCLE YOUR TANK.

you can do this with plants in your tank. so you dont throw money down the drain, do a fishless cycle. you can search for threads on this site explaining how to cycle.

if you do cichlids (i dont know much but this i do) most cichlid natural environment setups that people do are lots of rocks, little plants.

also SA/CA cichlids dont really match with africans. africans are a little more aggressive. if going african do you want to do lake malawi, Tanganyika, or victoria.

i got a lot of info from sinister kisses on the cichlid section of this forum. i dont know if she is still active but if you can find her in my opinion shes a cichlid expert and doesnt BS she will tell you straight up what works and what doesnt. and as always i encourage lots of reading and never stop.

i have now gotten 2 tanks to a decently good planted status (check em out here: http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/freshwater-general-discussion/61477-my-underwater-sanctuaries.html) and i love doing tropical communities with plants. plants are very fun and it brings so much life to the tank.

if you go planted make sure you get yourself some good substrate, i recommend florite by seachem, its used on my 16g which you can see from the pics, get a good filtration unit, doesnt necessarily need to be canister i run HOB's and a heater. a decent plant bulb. after all that pick yourself up some good easy starter plants if youve never done planted, they include: anachris, java fern, java moss, sword plants something to get your feet wet.

well i think this is a lot to start off so if you have anymore questions let us know

Thanks...I wouldn't dream of dropping fish in before a cycle, I've seen too many lost that way. Thanks for the pointers too! I will definitely use them if we decide to go planted cichlid! Btw your underwater sanctuaries are amazing!!
