it is the only one out of the barb family that when it isn't swimming it is in idle it is face down/tail up??? what is wrong with it? strange. all my other fish swim like a fish should swim... can u let me know on that also?? thanks..
Alkalinity is the buffering capacity of the water. It keeps your water's pH stable.
If your alkalinity is dropping, you need to do more frequent water changes and more gravel vacuuming. Dissolved organic solids in the water column decrease alkalinity. This can lead to wide swings of pH, which is very stressful and dangerous to fish.

PH is a test of alkalinity and acidity. Water is/should be ph 7 which is neutral.
Over time, the nitrogen process uses up calcium in the water while emitting nitric acid. This will drop the PH of the tank.
Weekly 25% water changes and occasional 50% water changes will ensure that your PH stays stable in your tank and is usually not a concern. If you fail to maintain your tank, eventually the PH will drop very low to a mild acid and kill off your filter's bacteria and eventually your fish with the resulting recycling.
