I forget the name of it, but someone posted a link not that long ago to a Walmart brand of the API master set. It was a lot cheaper if I remember right. I'd try looking for that one. Its also the one I plan on getting once I get the extra money.

That was probably me, Ryan. Walmart has the exact API Freshwater Liquid Master Test kit, just sold under a generic name for $17.88 plus shipping (it's $.97 if you get it shipped to you and I believe it qualifies for site-to-store, so in that case it is free).

Out of curiosity have you compared it to a API test to see if the results are the same. On the side of test strips, a few years ago I used Jungle Labs 5 in 1 test strips and after buying my API master kit I decided to compare the results, I did this for quite a while because I wanted to see if there was a difference over time, the strips always matched my API kit.

I haven't personally tried it, but I know people who have (people I trust very much when it comes to stuff like this...one of them is a champion betta breeder). I doubt I could find the thread again because the forum it was on is a high-traffic forum, but there was a thread in which a forum member said they purchased the Walmart generic kit and everything was EXACTLY the same as the API kit (labels and everything) except that the labels said whatever the generic name was, not API.
