Good to know thanks Laura! I think once it's established I will get a pearl gourami as the lfs actually stocks them! Also thanks for letting me know about the travel, I've always wondered if fish would survive the drive, now that I know that opens up so many possibilities for future tanks!!

Hello; Many times I have picked up fish in Indianapolis Indiana and transported them home, which takes more than six hours. Two hours from Knoxville TN. Some shops will blow O2 into the bag or use a larger bag if you tell them how long the trip will be. My biggest concern was to keep them at a decent temp. I used a styrofoam cooler to carry the bags in. I have never lost a fish during transport. I always try to get the fish when ready to head home.

Artemis,

I was only half joking about the feeder fish. People who keep aggressive, live-feeding fish have been known to keep a feeder tank with poorly colored/bred guppies as feeders. I know you're not looking for a 100 gallon tank yet, but using a plastic tub as a tank is completely legit.

Yeah, $40 for a small pleco is a bit overpriced. I paid 10 for my clown pleco and felt overcharged. Ask them about a bristlenose instead.....or call up one of the places out of town, since you know they can make the journey now.

Haha oh Aak I know you were joking lol! Only bugging you back! Plus the image of me trying to feed guppies to a fish would be pretty comical to think about lol! Thanks for all the info about the travel though, I am glad to hear that other people's fish survive the journey ok, and usually the fish in the bigger centers are more cheaply priced, I suppose because they are a chain and can't charge whatever they want? As is I felt a little ripped when I looked at my bill from the lfs and realized I was paying $4.99 per serpae, plus all our fun canadian taxes! Totally fine if the little bugger is going to survive, but if they don't it can get pretty pricey pretty quickly lol!

I think LFS will charge more because it isn't as easy to make a profit as it is for some chain pet stores. I have two fish stores besides Petco in town so they will charge a ton, because if you want to conveniently get something you will go there rather than drive an hour out of town.

Fish prices become crazy, I won't forget when I spent $26 on two shrimp, probably won't ever do that again. But $4.99 is the minimum cost of most of my fish, no fun :(

Definitely hear that! I still can't get over that they charge $10 for a betta here in town! I find I'm ok with paying a little extra on fish, but it's the decorations and tanks that I can't justify buying locally. You'd be amazed at the differences between the two! $40 here in town will get me a 6" tall castle whereas in the city two hours away I bought a bubbling half roman coliseum (about three times the size of the castle) for $26! Crazy crazy stuff. Which is why any major purchases I'll buy in the city (for example my 36g tank), as they have the extra incentive of being in Alberta (as opposed to my town in BC), where they charge only 5% sales tax compared to the 12% sales tax here in BC.

On a complete side note that DOES have to do with fish... Any ideas on what I could do with a 2.5g tank? Two weeks ago over the holidays all my community fish in the 5g were picking on my male betta and I didn't have much more benifical bacteria since I had just set up my 20g so I bought a 2.5g for him. Now that the 5g is going to be emptying out over to the 20g and 36g I'm going to move the betta back over to the 5g to live, but not sure if there is a use for the 2.5g? I don't really want to get rid of it since it is only two weeks old. Ideas? And no not a tank for feeder guppy fry Aak lol!! :D

I always go off topic, usually I'm good at coming back around though :) I cannot believe 12% tax, here in California it went up to 8.75% I think, it had been 8.25% and is up to something...many reasons I miss Oregon, I enjoyed paying $19.99 on the dot.

Yes, I'd definitely move the betta back to the 5g, I wouldn't keep one in any less than 10g mine is in my 36g. As for a 2.5 I think shrimp are fun, most around here know that I'm a die hard shrimp fan whether it's cherry shrimp, crystal, bamboo, bee, amano, etc. etc. (except the bamboo would not go in a 2.5g nor a 5g) but I think a real planted shrimp tank would be fabulous. Maybe with a nerite, might have to supply the nerite eventually with algae wafers I imagine it could run low on food.

Girl, you don't need to worry none about me. Hijack your own thread all you want.

Speaking of which....

THIS THREAD IS NOW ABOUT TUBE SOCKS! Are they warmer then regular socks or does it matter?

/discuss
Ha! Silly me. I had to look up tube socks and didn't realize that's what those were cold and I think fuzzy socks are far warmer than tube socks, so it definitely matters! My dad wears tube socks, aha :)

Weeeeeellll if you're really wanting to know lol, since I am probably one of the only people on this forum that sees -50 degrees celsius (or -58 deg F, whichever you prefer...), tube socks would be warmer for you legs than regular socks but that's it... If you want a reeeaaallly warm sock you want to get into the athletic hiking wool socks! Those are the ticket! The wool is warmer, more cushioney, and wicks sweat away from your feet, unlike a regular cotton sock that will make your foot sweat and leave it soaked. They're all I used to use when I had to work out in the cold (well and big ass boots of course!). As a side note, this is why you always want to use a non 100% cotton sock for working out as well! Otherwise it leaves your feet with blisters no matter how much you spend on the shoe! And that's it for my sock knowledge! Although Riseabove I must admit the fuzzy socks are my sock of choice for around the house, especially since our Northern Canadian floors can get pretty chilly!

Yeah the tax is brutal up here, and then there's our income tax which I won't get into, because one I don't think anyone wants to read my ranting for hours on end, and two I don't want to bore you to sleep lol!
Shrimp hey? Would a couple do ok in the 2.5g? What are they like, same sort of requirements as fish, or are they a whole other ballgame? I was thinking about something like that since I couldn't think of any fish that would enjoy the 2.5g. I was even debating about a frog but I think that would be pretty tight for it annd I'm not so much of a frog person, but shrimp could be doable.

Haha yes! I was definitely referring to inside the house :) I think the coldest I have experienced is around 20 degrees F when I lived in Oregon but that is it and I refuse to experience anything colder! But have a nice wool jacket and wool is fabulous.
20 degrees F! You lucky duck!! You just haven't lived until you go outside and you can't breathe because it is so cold out lol! There is something beautiful about all the snow and frost, but I certainly wish we could experience it with a little warmer climate! As is it was -30 deg C here over the whole holidays, sucks to have holidays and be stuck in the house the whole time!

What are shrimp like?! FABULOUS. Haha :) I'd go with cherry shrimp, I think they are the best beginner shrimp. There are also ghost shrimp that are cheaper but a bit less hardy.

On average my fish and inverts never live up to the scale on being finicky or hardy, mine always seem opposite of what they're supposed to be. But in general cherry shrimp are easy and good at picking up little bits of algae and just toodling around the tank. They're also pretty quick to breed (under good conditions of course) you would only need to start with like 1-3 maybe 5...but doubt that and you can put them in your other tanks if they mass produced and don't have a large bioload.

I wouldn't be an ADF in there, a bit too small I think, but shrimp are great. Newman on the forums has a shrimp bowl that he started, not sure if he's posted a lot on here about it, but it's a pretty good idea of a small little shrimp tank.

LOL, oh you trust me! I could not breathe, I was raised in Las Vegas so 120-130 degrees F was all about me, I loved it! So going to Oregon and even experiencing 50 degrees I was frozen! :( But I understand how amazingly beautiful it can be, I'd love to go to Alaska and see a lot their landscape during the frigid seasons (I'm not much for leaving the country or I'd go elsewhere).

But like you say being stuck inside is a total drag! I think it was 53 degrees here on Christmas!
