I'm thinking about getting 2-3 Ottos within the next 4-5 hours. They are small but very healthy. The man said that the ones that he gets will survive as long as you havge plants in your tank. I have an Amazon Sword and I'm getting a ball of Java Moss with the fish. I'd just like to hear your opinion of whether this is a good idea or not. Thanks for listening!!

Not sure what the man means by 'plants' but otos need a steady supply of soft green algae. Not all will eat algae wafers or veggies, and if you don't have a good steady supply of algae, they could starve.

They need a well estabished planted aquarium and should be kept in groups of 5 or more.

Just my 2cents.

The man at the store (which is a pure fish store) says that the otos that he has eats veggies, I even saw them eat some!! When he said 'plants', he included that plants tend to grow algae on them faster than tank walls and such. Idk. That's what he said. His Otos are about 2" and they are very calm,. He said that when I get them that I should do a 50% water change and feed them blanched zucchini when they were in the tank for about 30 minutes. Their bellies are plump and they look healthy. They have a 7 day return policy, but he said that he can extend the period for the Otos to about 2 weeks. Of course, I have to pay him a little, but I'd rather do that then have the fish die on me and I can't take them back.

lol. I got my 2 Otos now. They are nice and plump and freaking out cuz they're in a bag. Unfortunately, it will be another hour till I can go home. I currently have them in a bag, the one's that the pet stores put the fish in, that's in a brown paper lunch sack/bag, that's in yet another brown paper lunch sack/bag, that's in a plastic bag, that's in my hoodie. I'm trying to keep them warm cuz it's like 32F over where I live. I think it's working though. Oh, did I mention that I also have a thick coat on?? I don't know about them, but I'm MELTING!!

Thanks. I got to a place where it's about 60 in the building. I to walk several blocks to get there, but that's where my dad works and my fish are very popular. lol!! They've calmed down quite a bit in the 30 or so minutes that I've had them. They're both together in one spot of the bag attached to the side. They are ADORABLE!! I think that they are Otocinclus Affinis.

If he was 'plump and healthy' on the 21st, he could not have starved in 3 days....What makes you think it was starvation?
Because he wasn't eating anything from what I saw, and yes, within 23 days his belly caved in. I looked at him, dead and lifeless, and his stomach was caving in. I might have possibly not looked at him good enough, but they were swimming around so fast in the bag. I just returned him for store credit and I'm going to get some freeze-dried bloodworms.

NO!!! (Sorry for yelling!!) I took some water in and tested it (had to cuz of the dead Oto) and they even let me see the results. The pH was 7.2, the ammonia was 0, the nitrites were 0, and the nitrates were 20ppm!! They said that the Oto most likely died from stress from shipping and that it was weak. I told the woman that I have 9 fish in my tank and she said that my levels were good despite the fish in my tank. Oh, and did I mention that I took that water sample BEOFRE I did a water change (a day later). Total in inches from my full grown fish- 9.5 I'm not going to add any more fish in my tank, but it's pretty impresive howe low the levels are despite the numbers in my tank. Like I said, I'm stopping there. I'm not like one crazy person from Yahoo Answers that had 35 guppies in a 10 gallon tank!!
