What to do with Kribensis fry?

Hi, it's been a while since I've been on the boards, I hope you are all well.

This morning I begin my weekly gravel cleaning and water change and notice a large group of fry in the tank. It took me a while to figure out that my Kribs had a batch of babies.

My question is, what do I do with them? I have a fully stocked 55-gallon tank, so while I plan on leaving them in the tank with the parents to grow I don't want to keep them.

I'm also not sure if I want to start up another tank and I definitely don't want to "dispose" of them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yeah if you leave them in there most will likely become a part of the food chain

generally lfs don't want them until they are pretty well grown out so if that was your plan you are going to need a second tank

Yeah nanu got it right, they may only want fish that are of a suitable size. However i have seen very very young fish in some shops before. See what they say, Friends would most likely take them that'd work, but they gotta know how to look after them.

If you've seen their tank and know it's suitable... that's your best bet.

But if someone has a goldfish bowl, or a piranha lol

Everyone, thanks for the advice. I'm in the western suburbs and all the LFS have closed with the exception of Scott's. I'll stop in there and see if they are interested.

I don't know too many people with tanks, so that route most likely won't work.

Any one here on the boards from the Chicago area that is aware of a local network or club I can tap into?

Orange, if you're serious let me know.

ummm you shoudl have a cichlid association i will search for one for you i know here in detroit we have both a fish club and a cichlid association there are auctions every single weekend from october till late may i would guess being an even bigger city chicago has the same

these clubs are great places to find used equipment and inexpensive fish :) as well as advice that is invaluable

GCCA Home Page
 Welcome to CAFE
Chicago Killifish Association
GWAS's Forum

i would contact all four of these clubs even if they seem far away or more specific then your interests as generally they know of other fish clubs that maybe cant be found online :)

call the guppy group and talk to them betcha that they have info on a cichlid group or another fresh water group

most folks who do one kind of fish do others as well so talk to them find out what they do they might even have auctions etc

i found my fish lady through a live bearers group that i saw on craigs list they told me to call her she does just about everything a freshwater lfs would sell and is amazing she also go me involved in the auction scene

Yeah Aak, go to a meeting if you can, even if you don’t keep guppies. You will meet all kinds of people who are also into other fish. Fish clubs are great places to meet people who have real experience with a particular fish or situation. Also as Marcy said a great place for equipment! I bought a 36 inch light that worked for $3.00. I added a $20 ballast and now have a light that produces 90W for $23 bucks! Also you can get great deals on livestock.

My apologies to the OP for hijacking your thread!

plus someone who actively breeds guppies probably breeds other things, some will have cichlids some will have platties some plecos and some angels they will also be in touch with other people and groups, lots of times they also sell plants etc etc

not to mention someone is always buying out someone else's fish room and there are always an abundance of tanks etc to be picked up for super cheap

I got my first 55g at a fish club auction with a stand and lights and lid i paid 40.00 now this was in the 90's and things actually cost more in michigan thern because people had money but yeah im sure someone found a deal better then that this year

that 70g high i have is in the old tank style with 1/3" glass came with an oak stand an oak hood the tank a crappy filter and heater and a bunch of decor for 180.00 the stand alone sells at high end shops for 300.00 hood another 200 and a 70g tank with 1/4" glass new would have been about 300.00

so yeah go see the guppy people you won't be disappointed maybe you will start a guppy tank. maybe something else :)

they can also give you the low down on LFS in your area, for instance i don't buy at my old favorite store anymore because they buy fish from this nasty wholesaler who routinely brings in bad fish with out pure bloodlines and are frequently sick. IT's hard to tell these things when you are buying juvenile fish.

instead i drive about 50 miles to a place with out a lighted sign in a strip mall that i would have never found had they not told me about it.

Man that LFS has some sweet fish.
