AB is risky, if you get dead fish you are generally just out the money... even if they have a live arrival guarantee, you have to get them on the first try from UPS with a signature for arrival and photograph the dead fish with in 30 minutes... When you pay as much as you do on AB then pay to ship... then get something dead... well it's a bummer...
It depends on the shipper regarding being 'out the money.' I've purchased every fish I own except for 3 of the Otocinclus from Aquabid. I've never had a fish arrive dead or die after being added to my tank except one time.

A batch of fish that I bought were imported directly from out of the country and arrived with ich. I sent a photo of the group before I opened the bag and they said to notifiy them if any died. I treated with high temps and no medication. Two died within 16 hours of arriving, the other 10 recovered fine. I photographed the two fish that died, emailed the photo to the shipper. The shipper refunded me 17% of my cost.

In my experience, AquaBid is not that risky. You do pay more, but if you want something that your LFS cannot get, and you really want that particular fish, its a good way to get them. I have never dealt with a 'new' shipper, only those that have been around a long time and have good feedback.

I have ordered plecos on AB 3 times, 2 of 3 I had 1 doa or more, 1 time i missed UPS and was out the money because i had to get them later in the day and 1 fish was dead. I was ordering higher end stuff, so it was a good bit of money to be out. Most sellers don't refund shipping, so if you are paying 30 to ship 15 worth of stuff.. well...

In any event Fishman has a store local that gets in good stuff if i remember correctly. I would bet his store could order in what he is looking for if ask.

Im not anti AB by any means. I got beautiful L199s there and to be honest it was the only way i was going to get some.

1 time i missed UPS
Not sure who you've ordered from, but that death rate is high from my experience.

I've never used UPS as a shipper though, always USPS. The Post Office is the only shipper that has heated/cooled facilities the packages stay in while not out for delivery. UPS/FedEX/DHL all keep packages inside the delivery trucks and can keep them parked overnight outside no matter the weather.

I also pick them up at the Post Office directly, instead of having them ride around in a truck all day. Where I used to live in Iowa, my street was the last street the carrier came to. He left the Post Office at 8am and didn't get to my house until 4:30 or later most days. I never wanted the fish (no matter the cost) to ride around all day to get to me.

I've had fish shipped in when the temperature was -22 degrees (not counting wind chill) and as high as 98. No losses. The two Otocinclus cocama that I lost due to ich were sent when the temperature was 72. I didn't ask that the shipping price be reduced, but when they refunded me 17% of my cost, it was the total cost, so included 17% off the shipping charges. I was surprised, and I'm sure its not 'typical' of a shipper.

I'm sure Fishman1995 can find decent stock at his LFS, and if I remember right, they are willing to special order stuff for him.

I can find ALMOST anything i want at my lfs. And they've had Gold nugget's, BN's, Albino BN"S. Clowns, and Bulldog plecos before plus the common ones. I can get anything i want really from there, but there females are always drop dead ugly IMO. They're a pale color and they never recover from it when i bring them home. I want a big colorful GIANT half moon plakat off AB for as cheap as i can.....only one issue. Mama would have to do it, cause im under 18 lol.

Well plecos don't always ship well, even when i see new shipments at my LFS they tend to look like crap.

My point for Fishman was really that given his "flip-floppy-ness" on these tanks, going from quitting, to entirely unsuitable setups, to crawfish, to this and that, i think he would be better suited to order something in.

Fish, Im going to guess that your lfs doesn't stock a ton of F bettas because there isn't a demand, if you ask him to contact a betta breeder for ya I betcha he could do that and find you some beautiful fish. You could also check Craigslist, check in general for sale as well as the pets section and maybe you can find a breeder there :)
