So let me start this story with my brother is an idiot... anyhow with that being said he went
on vacation for a week and wants me to take care of his 55g koi tank. so im there now and what do i
see but a yellow tinted, Stinky water. the gravel is even yucky brown/yellow looking. its got 14 pretty decent size Koi in it... its over populated by id say 10 large fish. they range in size from 3 inches to
almost 8 inches i have no idea when he got this tank. im assuming he got the fish from our father. he
has no testing supplies for me to find out the levels. when i move the gravel just tons of crap comes flowing out. the fish are discolored. he has a HOB filter of some kind no lid on it that would have the name brand lol. its odd looking to say the least. Anyway what ive done to attempt to clean this as i dont wanna see these fish die in my hands is. 50% water change ive vacuumed up most of the gravel prolly 65 percent.
cleaned out his filter. however there are two what i can only imagine are bacteria plastic things lol i did not clean those. i replaced the water with well water with water conditioner... it still smells. but i have no carbon here to fix that... i dont really care if he is mad at me for this but i wont be to blame for these fish when they go belly up. tomarrow when i come back here ill bring my testing strips to get more info. but do you think there is anything else i should do? ive never had a tank go this
"Bad" i was always Either lucky or something lol. anyway let me know please!!!

also. I thought it might just be an Algae bloom of some kind but i dont think so as it doesnt look
"Cloudy" it looks yellow almost like tanning from driftwood... i dont know thanks tho

yea i cleaned them off in the water i pulled out.. i had read on someones post about doing that i believe in the newbie section. now in the filter there are two plastic discs that go inside with little fingers that stick out im assuming thats
the Bio part of the filter... it looks really odd lol. but i did not clean that just the pads. i would of placed new pads as these are really bad looking but i just cant find them. im going to do a water change in it everyday till he returns. then slap him in the back of the head lol

Also be cautious of a huge pH swing. If your brother wasn't doing regular water changes, then the built up organic waste may have caused the tank's pH to change over time and it can vary quite a bit from the well water. The fish can certainly adapt to a different pH, but add new water slowly if there is indeed a big difference.

sorry guys i forgot to repost, I got really busy. Anyhow to sum up the taking care of his fish i tested the water for the first time Ammonia was 1.5 id guess i have the API freshwater test kit and it was between colors lol. the Nitrite was
between 0.25 and 0.50(continue question about that in a moment) and Nitrate was 5.0 or 10ppm Side note i have an
awful time with colors so please excuse the inbetweens. anyway i have a cichlid tank im new to it very new. It started to smell badly before i did some water changes added some carbon. i was sure it was caused by me feeding live foods. anyhow i tested water the PH was like 7.6 the rest where zero except Nitrites at 0.25 i dont know why...and before i do water changes the Ammonia is above zero but not 0.25 so there is some. not sure what i should do . Or if this is just the finial stages of a cycled tank. unsure :( my planted tank is 7.2 ph and zeros across the board. so i didnt have much to compair it to anyhow thanks for the help...OH i got his yellow water under control. I believe it was because of the iron in his well water... either way his gravel was just full of crap so it was most likely not as bad as i had thought by looking at it. Fish are still kucky looking but i donno. anyway thanks !
