So I got a 10 gallon for him instead, but I don't have a filter for it. How am I going to cycle it and how long will it take?? I have him in a 2 gallon bowl for now and I'm going to change the water twice a week, just like my other tanks. So how am I going to cycle a tank without a filter?? :confused: I have a heater for it and decorations, I just ran out of money for the filter. Oops, silly me.

Hello; Tanks cycle to the point of having a sufficent population of beneficial bacteria somewhere in the tank. Filter media is handy for fishkeepers to move around, but the bb will live on other surfaces in the tank. Take some gravel, a decoration of other item from an established tank and place it in the new tank. The bb should be on their surfaces and should seed the new tank. I usually put some plants and snails from a established(cycled) into a new tank. They will produce respiration waste products which will feed the bb and they will have the bb on their surfaces. In the early days of aquarium keeping many tanks ( I did a few) were set up with no filters at all and It still will work. A sponge filter operated by an air pump is a low cost way to go. As you know bettas can take air from the surface so no filter is not so much of an issue. No filter in a tank - keep a low bio load for the surface area.

Congrats on becoming sixteen. I was sixteen once, took around a year to get over it.
