Hello, i have a 46 gallon bowfront. I was running a fluval 305 and a whisper 2 hob, i was just given a fluval 304 which I installed today (replaced all sponges and media). I also have 6 live plants in there. I am not using carbon due to one fish being a TRUE Parrot Cichlid. I always heard there is no such thing as too much filtration but with the 305 the 304 and the whisper 2, My water is being turned over almost 16 times an hour. Thanks

I have always heard and assumed that the filtration the better. I think the only concern I would have is whether or not the current produced from the filters is too powerful/strong for the fish (some fish don't like too much current while others do). Is there any particular concerns you have about running three filters? I don't think you need to run all three but I don't think it will hurt anything.

That is just my thoughts on the issue....I don't have much experience with multiple filters (almost always have one filters, sometimes two).

The only reason i added the 304 is because it was free and I am a trying to provide the cleanest environment that I can. As for current, i modified the output with a Y fitting, putting one on each side of the tank. It seems to really help cut back on current and everyone seems happy. The reason i ask was just to make sure that the biological media will be ok (having so much). I know a tank will only grow as much beneficial bacteria as needed, so im wondering if this filter would actually be useless.

Hello; The additional filtration may well not be needed. If the mechanical filtration was enough without the new filter, then it is not needed to remove detritus from the water. You will not need it for beneficial bacteria.
There may be some argument for the extra current giving the fish a more natural flow. This will depend on the type of fish.
The extra current may help keep detritus suspended longer so the filters can pick it up.
The extra filter will consume more electricity.
An extra filter in a box is always nice when one breaks or a new tank is set up.
