I have a $300 budget, I need to get a filtration system for a fresh water 150g tank., its for the son in law. I saw a couple on Fosters and Smith but they only did 90g of water. Whats my best choices?

From what I've heard, you will want to go for a canister filter that is rated higher then the tank you want to put it into. Try some of the sites advertised here, or something like pet solutions, or something other then fosters (over-priced in my experience), just be sure to check out customer ratings on the sites you look at (independent ratings, not ones on the site itself. Just run a search for "customer reviews" with the name of whatever site you are looking at).
Sorry I don't have more specific info. Good luck!

I have both the Rena Filstar and Fluval brand canisters, I would highly recommend those. The Fluval provides more water circulation than the Rena Filstar; as I've found. I have the Fluval 305 and the Rena Filstar XP1, honestly I think it's like trying to compare Macintosh and Microsoft, people just make preferences, honestly I enjoy both equally. I highly recommend them if you can find them, I paid full price and don't regret it, but of course finding a deal is preferable.

I know the Fluval FX5 handles 150g tanks, it's a little over $300 USD though. The Rena Filstar XP3 is for 175g, little over $120 USD and the Rena Filstar XP4 is for 265g tanks is about $200 USD.

Also keep in mind Fluval will sell carbon and such for the filter and suggest you replace it every so often, you really don't need to unless for some reason you're medicating your tank, but I don't recommend ever really medicating your tank. Carbon can also clean up tannins a bit, but other than that it isn't a vital necessary for the filtration system, the filter media with the good bacteria is plenty.

Hello; Perhaps a gift card or the like with a note that it is to be spent on the tank. The son in law may have a prefered type or brand and may have space or some other restrictions that require a specific set up.
