I don't know if your Petco will test or not, but if they do be sure to get the numbers for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. I can't remember if you ever said you cycled your tank, but I doubt if you don't know about testing the water, so I am wondering if you ever read the "Stickies" at the beginning of this forum because otherwise you won't know what the numbers mean and how your tank is doing. Also when you say you will change the water, just how much and how often are you doing this - and do you vacuum the substrate?

I just changed the water in the tank. I took the fish out, put them in fish bowls (betta in a little one), used the vacuum tubey thing to clean the gravel, and I took out about 3/4 the water. I put warm water in, put some of the stuff in that 'Makes tap water safe for fish!!' and replaced the filter. I let it run for a while, then put the fish back in. Good enough? I still haven't gone to petco, yet.

Yeah, that should be ok. You can vaccuum the gravel while the fish are still in there. I've accidentally sucked up some of my stupid fry before. They were fine cuz I took them out of the bucket, but they were swimming around like usual after I put them back in the tank. My older fish just hang back and watch me. My Guppies though, follow the gravel vaccuum like it's a game. Fish are so fun!!

You definetely need the Water Dechlorinator. The chlorine in tap water kills fish and for a 10 gallon you should only need 5 mL. How much of the water are you changing? You can suck out only some of the water, put new water in a clean bucket, treat the water, and pour it back in slowly and distribute it around the tank.

Without testing the water is it hard to say how much you should be changing, but I will guess about 50% at least once a week. With that many fish the ammonia build up could be fast. I certainly wouldn't take the fish out as that is very stressful for them. Also be sure the temperature of the water is the same within a degree or two. Sudden changes can be lethal.

Thyra means the filter cartridge. When you throw away the cartridges it gets rid of most of the beneificial bacteria. If you are going to get rid of it, put a new one in and keep it in there for as long as possible (several months) and when you go to replace it, rinse it in the water and squeeze it gently and then throw it away. This will put adobe if the bacteria back into the tank. I suggest you look up more on benificial nitrifying bacteria.

[QUOTE=This will put adobe if the bacteria back into the tank. Kiara, I am not sure what that statement means. Is it possibly a typo? I also haven't heard any one saying to squeeze the old filter to put bacteria back in the tank. I guess it would depend on what kind of filter media you have, but in my case I would find it useless to try to squeeze the media.
